Frequently Asked Questions
What is a US paycheck / take-home pay calculator?
It estimates how much of your gross salary you keep after federal income tax, FICA (Social Security and Medicare), and your state's income tax (if any). It's a planning tool, not a substitute for your employer's payroll or a tax professional.
Which tax year does this calculator use?
2025 federal tax brackets, standard deduction, and FICA thresholds, for single filers. State income tax figures are also for 2025. Married filing jointly and other filing statuses aren't supported yet.
How is federal income tax calculated?
We apply the 2025 federal marginal tax brackets (10% to 37%) to your income after the standard deduction and any pre-tax 401(k) contribution you enter. We use the single-filer standard deduction only — no itemized deductions.
What is FICA and how is it calculated?
FICA is Social Security (6.2% up to the annual wage base cap) plus Medicare (1.45%, with an extra 0.9% Additional Medicare tax on income above $200,000 for single filers). FICA is calculated on gross wages, before any 401(k) deduction.
Does this calculator include state income tax?
Yes, for all 50 states and Washington DC. Nine states (Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Wyoming) have no wage income tax. The rest use either a flat rate or progressive brackets, applied automatically based on the state you select.
Does this include 401(k), local, or city taxes?
You can enter a pre-tax 401(k) contribution, which reduces your federal and state taxable income. Local tax is supported for New York City, Philadelphia, and every Maryland county — pick your city/county from the "Local/city tax" dropdown when it appears (it shows automatically for NY, PA, and MD). Local income tax in other cities (e.g. Ohio and Kentucky municipalities, Denver's occupational tax) isn't modeled yet.
Does this include the Child Tax Credit or other tax credits?
The Child Tax Credit is included — enter your number of qualifying children (under 17) and it reduces your federal tax owed by up to $2,000 per child, phasing out above $200,000. This is a simplified, non-refundable calculation; it doesn't model the refundable Additional Child Tax Credit for lower-income filers. The Earned Income Tax Credit, education credits, and the dependent care credit aren't modeled.
Will my paycheck match these numbers exactly?
Often close, but your actual paycheck also reflects your W-4 elections, benefits deductions (health insurance, HSA/FSA), employer-specific retirement rules, and payroll timing. Use this as a planning estimate, and verify with your pay stub or a tax professional for exact figures.
